The right to decide
One of the greatest rights that we have here in the United States is that we have the freedom to choose. Every day we wake up and we get to choose who we are going to be that day, what we are going to do that day, and why we want to be the way we are. Though there be many who will say you are crazy and messed up, their opinions in the end don’t matter. How you think of your self is what truly matters at the end of the day.
One of the ongoing disputes in the world today is contention between gay and lesbian marriages and the traditional marriage between one man and one woman. No one has the right to take away your agency or right to choose. You have the ability and the right to marry who ever you want. Gay and lesbian marriage is protected by the United States Constitution. US District Judge Vaughn Walker said, ‘“banning gay marriage was “unconstitutional under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses.”’(gay). As has been found throughout all the united states one can not have their freedom taken away. The right of life, liberty, and property can not be taken away just because the majority of the people think that their way is the only way and that if its not their way then it must be banished. We must protect our rights and freedom.
As mentioned above we fought for this country so that we may have the decision to choose for ourselves. But freedom is not free. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction that occurs. Every decision that we make will have an effect on us immediately or down the road. For example, the consequence for eating when your hungry is a full stomach and the energy needed to accomplish desired tasks. But the consequence for eating unhealthy food may not change our health that very moment or even with in the next week or year, but it will lead to obesity or many other health problems. Prohibiting you to move on with the rest of your life. A Man named Peter Anderson wrote an article about a book that he read called, “8 attributes of great achievers” written by Cameron C. Taylor. In Peter’s on-line article he said, “Try as you might you can’t escape the consequences of your decisions, whether good or bad.”(Anderson) The decisions we are making will affect us sooner or later in our life and sooner or later we will receive great gain from those decisions, or we will have great loss.
All of us at one time or another will go through challenges and trials that to us may seem hard or impossible to overcome, so we are swayed to choose a different path then what God has in store for us. In this life we choose how much we have accomplished, how much we are accomplishing, and how much we will accomplish. Author Idowu Koyenikan said, “Failure is constructive feedback that tells you to try a different approach to accomplish what you want.”(Koyenikan) Failure, means different things to different people. But in this case, I am going to use the word failure in the way of not meeting the standard God has placed before you. Since the beginning of time God put a man with a woman to multiply and replenish the earth, so that they might have joy. Although joy can be felt in many different ways, eternal joy that comes from keeping Gods commandments is the greatest joy one may receive here on this earth. God has stated through revelation that marriage is strictly between a man and a woman. But doesn’t that take away our freedom of choice? Aren’t Gods commandments restrictions in preventing us from choosing for ourselves what we want to become? The matter of the fact is that it doesn’t.
Logically speaking, since we are here on this earth. It means that we had to come from somewhere. Nothing comes from nothing, but something comes from something. You are that something. You came from somewhere and you were sent here for a purpose. Just because trials have been placed in your life it doesn’t mean that you can’t accomplish what you were sent to do. Gods Commandments are set forth to help us accomplish all that we can become. Teachers place rules in their classrooms so there is order and an environment of learning. God places commandments on this earth so there is order, and an environment of learning.
“By altering the way you live your life, even in a small way, change can present opportunities that can have a domino effect, providing you with more choices than you ever dreamed possible.”(Attitude) Deciding between what is right and what is wrong can be very hard. We only know, what we know. We know nothing that we don’t. But there is someone who directs us and guides us in our lives to help us better understand our purpose and our identity here on this earth. Change towards God is a Change that will better our lives and make it more fulfilling. We were given a gender and a identity before we came to this world. Why, we might never know on this earth. But as we come closer to God, we will better understand our purpose and reason for being who we are and what we are. Agency allows us to choose between God and the world, but it doesn’t allow us to choose the consequences.
